If you want to run your own Peer Group Expedition the DES is here to help you.
We will appoint a mentor to help answer your questions and give you guidance.
We can also advise on approval paperwork, safety, plans, insurance etc.
To gain DES approval you will be required to fill out an Expedition approval form, provide a copy of your itinerary and conduct a risk assessment. Forms to help you do this are available on this page (see Get Approval button). This is a YET form but can be used to get DES approval also. Just complete the form and email back to the DES office.
We can email you an example of a filled out form to help with the process!
The Peer Group Expedition Approval system is currently being reviewed to make it as straightforward a process as possible for 2010. Any Young Leader wishing to run a trip will find the benefits the Society can provide will be very helpful including the opportunity to apply for training grants (up to 100%).
Please contact the DES office for more information.
Our next Young Leaders Seminar will be held on Saturday 14 November @ Wey Valley School, Weymouth. Please contact the DES office if you wish to attend. There will be no charge for DES Members.
Any member of the Society can apply for a Training Grant. Potentially any course that would make you a more proficient Leader can qualify. For suggestions see training course pdf (left). You don't have to live in Dorset to apply but you must be a Member of the Society.
The most obvious route is via the National Governing Body for sport (see table below). The National Mountain Centre at Plas y Brenin provide most of the courses we recommend.
Your local outdoor activity centre will almost certainly run a number of courses. See the Internet for details.

As a Society we are unique in the UK in sponsoring adventure training for Young Leaders and more importantly encouraging Peer Group Expeditions. We are indeed fortunate in having so many outstanding Young Leaders. Our continued progress in the 21st Century will wholly depend upon an increasingly qualified membership of more highly competent Young Leaders.
